14 August 2019 Update - Added two new demos: Liquid and Hell! (Mac Demo Amassment 1.1) Many thanks to Daxeria.

In the early 1990s, many assembly coders were switching from the home computer lines (Atari ST, Commodore 64, Commodore Amiga) to the PC and Macintosh. As they were used on their old computers, they wanted to program their new machines in C and assembly language to boost the performance to the maximum. Unfortunately, the x86 assembly language of the IBM PC was not as comfortable as the 68k assembly language.

With the release of the Power Macintosh 7200 with the PowerPC 601 chip in 1995, a computer with a workstation-like RISC chip became affordable for many computer enthusiasts. They could get their hands on an amount of processing power, which you only could dream of some years before. Soon after, the first demos appeared for the Power Macintosh and a small demo scene emerged (1998-2003).

This is a collection of all Mac demos & related software for Macintosh Systems from Mac OS 9.2.2 to pre-release System 1, for multiple Macintosh computer models, both PowerPC and 68k. The list is not yet complete, but it is pretty big, with roughly a bit over a 100 demos & similar software currently archived.

The majority of the software is 3D demos ('graphics demos') and intros, which are what 'demoscene' is most commonly associated with, although some '2D' demos, music, mini games and even 3D modelling software, all related to demoscene (such as programs authored by Mac 'sceners' to aid in creating more demos) are contained here.

Demos often share a few similar characteristics with 'multimedia presentations' that were common in the late 80s and the 90s, but it may be argued they belong to a category of their own. For that reason, they are not included here. To seek them, the best place to start is checking the 'Multimedia' folder in the AMUG DVD Collection.

For convenience, all the demos in this collection were divided in 4 categories:
- Native Demos (68k and PPC Mac apps);
- Java Demos (Java-based apps, currently only contains JCthugha);
- Flash Demos (Macromedia / Flash apps, currently empty);
- JavaScript Demos (JavaScript-based scripts designed to run in browsers, currently empty).
If a Java, Flash or JavaScript demo cannot run in any Mac system up to Mac OS 9.2.2, it won't be included here.

Each app is contained in a canonically-named folder of its own. All of these folders have each a folder called 'Installer', which contains the original archives the way they were originally distributed, without any form of tampering (meaning no repackaging, no renaming and no changing of Creator/Type codes).

Outside those 'Installer' folders are the installed files themselves. Example:
> Pyromania Redux
>>> Installer
>>>>>> Pyromania.sit
>>> Pyromania Folder
>>>>>> Pyromania File A
>>>>>> Pyromania File B

A purist can simply ignore anything outside the 'Installer' folders and reinstall everything, while everyone else will already have every demoscene app ready to go at the same time. In other words, this collection strives to both preserve history and be practical.

When running demos & other software, some things are good to keep in mind:
- By default, stick to 640x480 screen resolution and 256 colors. Some demos require even lower color depth, however (making them unusable in some modern PPC Macs), while some may require or benefit from higher resolutions and color depths;
- Very few demos require a specific Mac computer (i.e. Mac II) or computer family;
- Some of these demos, whether they will work or not, WILL crash your computer and require a reboot, so save all your important work before running them. Symptoms vary from hard crash to soft crash or buggy looks.
- If you get buggy colors after running a demo, switching the color depth once and then switching it back to what it was will often fix it.
- For demos you can't run natively, virtual machines and emulators, like vMac, Mini vMac, Basilisk, SheepShaver and QEMU may help a lot.

The 1st download contains the entire collection in a Disk Copy 6 image, packed with StuffIt Deluxe 4.0.1 in StuffIt 1.5.1 format.
Intended for those using SSW 7 ~ Mac OS 9.2.2.

The 2nd download contains the entire collection, packed with StuffIt Deluxe 4.0.1 in StuffIt 1.5.1 format.
Intended for those using System 6 and earlier. (Files may be less organized, visually.)

Finally, it is encouraged that the demos & related apps found in this collection eventually have their own pages here at the Macintosh Garden (a few already do). This collection is here for convenience.
