  • Patches providing Mac support are currently being tested for all four Van Helsing games. You know, the strange thing: i can play it on mac, but it is buggy. The last update was 3-4 monthes ago. Mac support was provided right from the start i think. At least when 2-nd VH game was out, first already was mac-friendly.
  • Destroy All Humans Mac OS X – Remake Version – Nominated for the “Best Remake of 2020” award, Destroy All Humans for Mac is now Action, Adventure Tell Me Why Mac OS.

History is rich with stories of adventure, courage, and redemption. Through the stories of Beorn, a young Viking man, and Evyn, a Welsh serf during the time of the Battle of Hastings, we will enter into these adventures, enjoy watching feats of courage, and ponder these two young characters’ growth and redemption with discussion, read alouds, and a few creative projects.

Emily Brigham holds a BA in Primary Education from the University of North Florida. She was homeschooled through high school in the classical tradition, and previously taught the elementary grades in a Waldorf-inspired public charter school. Her classical upbringing instilled in her what Plato called an “affinity for the good” in academics, art, and virtue, while her Waldorf training inspired an appreciation of the unique nature of the child. She now seeks to cultivate those whole-child pedagogical approaches in the classical, liturgical tradition, to awaken in her own students that “affinity for the good.”

Emily lives in Jacksonville, Florida. Her avocations include bringing classical, sacred, and old-time music to churches, front porches, and street corners, and coaxing as many flowers as possible into her garden. These, and a trip to the mountains, are where she loves to find the glimpses of God’s goodness in these sacred ordinary days. ebrigham.scholeacademy@gmail.com

Computer: You will need a stable, reliable computer, running with a processor with a speed of 1 GHz or better on one of the following operating systems: Mac OS X with Mac OS 10.7 or later; Windows 8, 7, Vista (with SP1 or later), or XP (with SP3 or later). We do not recommend using an iPad or other tablet for joining classes. An inexpensive laptop or netbook would be much better solutions, as they enable you to plug an Ethernet cable directly into your computer. Please note that Chromebooks are allowed but not preferred, as they do not support certain features of the Zoom video conference software such as breakout sessions and annotation, which may be used by our teachers for class activities.

High-Speed Internet Connection: You will also need access to high-speed Internet, preferably accessible via Ethernet cable right into your computer. Using Wi-Fi may work, but will not guarantee you the optimal use of your bandwidth. The faster your Internet, the better. We recommend using a connection with a download/upload speed of 5/1 Mbps or better. You can test your Internet connection here.

Webcam: You may use an external webcam or one that is built in to the computer. Webcam Recommendations: Good (PC only) Best (Mac and PC)

Headset: We recommend using a headset rather than a built-in microphone and speakers. Using a headset reduces the level of background noise heard by the entire class. Headset Recommendations: USB 3.5mm

Adventure

Zoom: We use a web conferencing software called Zoom for our classes, which enables students and teachers to gather from around the globe face to face in real time. Zoom is free to download and easy to use. To download Zoom:

  1. Visit zoom.us/download.
  2. Click to download the first option listed, Zoom Client for Meetings.
  3. Open and run the installer on your computer.
  4. In August, students will be provided with instructions and a link for joining their particular class.

Travel on a fabulous journey through magical Oz to save Dorothy from the Wicked Witch of the West's evil clutches. Based on the beloved tale by L. Frank Baum--perhaps better known as the timeless classic film of the same name--this interactive CD-ROM puts a new twist on the familiar story: Dorothy is seized by the winged monkeys and imprisoned in the Witch's castle; in order to free her and get the heart, courage, and brain they respectively long for, the Tin Man, Lion, and Scarecrow must find jewels hidden throughout Oz to activate the key to the Witch's lair.

Players collect jewels by participating in nine learning activities scattered throughout four virtual environments drawn from the original story (Emerald City, Land of the Munchkins, and more); in addition, fun (and, of course, educational) puzzles pop up everywhere to liven up the journey and involve kids in the story. Remember the field of poppies that put Dorothy to sleep? Here players must figure out how to wake the Cowardly Lion from a poppy-induced slumber, challenging their problem-solving and creativity skills while making them feel like one of the gang. Kids can easily navigate through Oz on their own, or by clicking on a map of the city that tells them where they are and where they've been. And, if they ever get in a real bind, there's a magic mirror they can use to get help from Glinda the Good Witch.

The activities challenge a variety of skills, and most have been thoughtfully created to echo the feel and flavor of Oz and the kinds of things and people you'd expect to find in such an enchanting place. For instance, players must help a disgruntled and very vocal tree get rid of its itchy bugs, cleverly disguised as fruit, by choosing the fruit that doesn't belong with the others--a great practice in pattern recognition. At another stop, kids help an amnesiac munchkin regain her memory by concocting a fruity potion of just the right proportions--too much apple or not enough pear, and you won't get the jewel that rewards the right mixture; here players hone their grasp of measurement and fractions. Three different levels of play adjust the difficulty of the activities, so kids can continue to enjoy the game even as they grow older and better at many of the challenges.

Though the learning activities emphasize many of the same skills as other educational software for kids, it is the quality of the graphics and the heart of the story that distinguish Oz from the pack of competing products; the characters are richly illustrated and given real personalities, which adds to the feeling of adventure and purpose players gain as they work through the activities. And the story itself, so familiar to many of us and yet still so compelling, is hard to top--who can resist the chance to throw a bucket of water on the Wicked Witch?
